What Counts as a Kids' Dental Emergency

Not every dental concern requires an urgent call, but some situations should be addressed the same day whenever possible. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes that dental emergencies for children include facial swelling, infections, uncontrolled bleeding, pain, and oral-facial trauma, and access to after-hours emergency care is considered an essential part of a child’s dental home. Parents in Forest Grove can feel reassured knowing that guidance from our on-call dentist is just a phone call away when something unexpected arises.

Some of the most common situations we see include:

  • A knocked-out permanent tooth, which should be kept in milk or saline, and addressed as quickly as possible
  • A chipped or fractured tooth following a fall or sports injury
  • Significant tooth pain or sensitivity that is keeping your child from eating or sleeping
  • Facial swelling around the jaw or cheek, which may signal an infection
  • A lost or broken dental crown or filling

If you are unsure whether what your child is experiencing qualifies as an emergency, our team is always happy to talk through the situation with you.

How We Approach Urgent Pediatric Care

Forest Grove families driving in to see us will find a practice built around making kids feel comfortable, even when their visit is unplanned and stressful. Dr. Tesha Waggoner is a board-certified pediatric dentist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, which means she has advanced training in managing dental trauma and urgent care for children of all ages and temperaments. Our team uses the same calming strategies during emergency visits that we use every day: patient communication, gentle handling, and an environment designed to ease anxiety.

For children who need additional support during an urgent procedure, we offer nitrous oxide as well as other sedation options to help them stay comfortable. Weighted blankets, low lighting, and the presence of our in-office dogs, Meyers in the morning and CJ in the afternoon, are also available to help soothe children who may be frightened. Our goal is to treat the emergency efficiently while also making sure your child walks away feeling calm and cared fo

Parents who have made that trip consistently tell us they feel the difference from the moment they walk in.
